Drum and Snowshoe Making Workshop

- Minnie Dennis, DRFN Social Working Group -

DRFN-DrumSnowshoeWorkshopIn February, Amos Dick and Gordon Peter from Ross River came to Good Hope Lake and spent two weeks teaching drum and snowshoe making. They started with choosing the right tree and carving the stick to form the snowshoe frame. They brought moose hide with them and taught how to cut the hide into babiche and how to weave the babiche into the snowshoe frame.

Amos took people out to get birch to make a drum. He showed people how to plane the wood to make it thin enough to shape into a drum, and how to attach the caribou hide onto the drum. Amos impressed people with his drumming and taught people how to drum and sing traditional songs.

Next year we hope to advertise this workshop more broadly so that we can bring more people to have the chance to learn these skills from our elders, and we hope to attract people from outside of the Good Hope area to come to the workshop. We also hope to be able to teach these skills in our school.

Natural Resources Presentations

The Natural Resource Operations from Smithers BC will be in our community February 15, 2011, to put on a 'Mining 101' and later in the spring more departments will be here to do a presentation for our community regarding trap lines, environmental and fish and wildlife. We have been working together to better inform all local people of all of the new rights and regulations for better communication.

New Saw Mill for Dease River First Nation

- Minnie Dennis & Crystal Carlick, DRFN Social Working Group -

Dease River First Nation recently invested in a saw mill as a means to providing local jobs and economic development opportunities for Dease River First Nation.  As a result of the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed between the Ministry of Family and Children Development and representatives who signed onto the agreement, funds were committed to DRFN to enable the investment in a top of the line saw mill.  The intention of the Memorandum of Understanding was to provide greater support and greater quality of life to families by creating local jobs for local people.

With the purchase of the saw mill, DRFN community members were also given training in how to set up and operate the mill.  DRFN's saw mill is now operating and with the trained community members work has commenced to fulfill a commitment from a local mine including production and delivery of building materials as well as construction of new core racks for the mine.
