ABOUT DAYLU DENA COUNCIL

Lower Post, BC is located on Highway 97,  the Alaska Highway, approximately 23 kilometers south-east of Watson Lake, Yukon, and is home to the Daylu Dena Council.  The population of Lower Post is approximately 300.  Lower Post is one of three Kaska Dena Communities located in British Columbia.

Opening of the Health Center

LowerPost-HealthCenterLower Post residents are eagerly anticipating the opening of Lower Post's Health Center, which is expected to be open towards the end of May.

The Health Center's full dental care facility will be able to provide basic treatments such as extractions, fillings and dental hygiene. The dental practitioner will come once a year and will remain for approximately two weeks. The first visit from the dental practitioner is planned to coincide with the opening of the Health Center.

The Health Center will be able to provide laser treatment, useful in the treatment of diabetic ulcers, reduction in inflammation of muscles or joints, smoke cessation and other therapeutic benefits.

The Health Center has an Elder care facility, where Elders can shower, receive foot care and also receive hydro-jet therapy. There are many benefits of hydro-jet therapy including soothing of aches and pains, and stress reduction.

The Health Center will employ approximately eight staff, with Sonia P. Laukkanen as the Health Director. While services to Lower Post residents will be free of charge, the Health Center will be able to provide treatments to non-residents on a cost for treatment basis.

Jean Gleason Memorial Fund

Daylu Dena Council is pleased to announce that it has established a $50,000 scholarship fund in memory of Jean Gleason.  In keeping with Jean's generosity of spirit and strong convictions regarding improving the quality of life for her people, the Jean Gleason Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to assist Kaska individuals who are pursuing a post-secondary education.

With the fund established, the next step in for Daylu Dena Council to develop the terms of reference, the application criteria and the approval process.  It is hoped that this work will be completed by spring, 2011, in time for students to apply to the Jean Gleason Memorial Scholarship Fund to assist with their fall studies.

The Jean Gleason Memorial Scholarship Fund will augment the funding initiatives provided by the New Relationship Trust (NRT) at http://www.newrelationshiptrust.ca/initiatives/education.
